What To Pack When Visiting Umngazi Hotel & Spa

Come rain or shine, Umngazi Hotel & Spa has a variety of activities for you and your family. For the adventurous type, there are hikes, mountain bike routes (own bicycles needed), a gym, boat cruises, SUP and kayak rentals, and more. For those looking to unwind, there is a spa, a swimming pool, unspoiled beaches, a lovely little library, and beautiful, serene gardens to explore. 

To make sure you have the best holiday at Umngazi Hotel & Spa, we’ve put together an extensive list of seasonal items to pack for all of our wonderful guests. 

Whether you’re coming for a holiday of fun and adventure, or you’re hoping to relax and de-stress, here are the items you’re going to need to pack:

Spring 

From September to December, the weather starts getting a little warmer throughout South Africa. With an average temperature of 24C, the days are warm but the evenings can still be a little nippy. There can also often be a cool breeze in the day, and the ocean is cool. 

What To pack: 

  • Sunscreen 
  • Hat 
  • Swimming costume & beach wear 
  • Beach towels (there are towels available at reception, for a fee) 
  • Hiking shoes if you plan on going walking or hiking 
  • Insect repellent 
  • A light jacket and some warm clothes for the evening 
  • Casual clothes for mealtimes  
  • Books (there is a small library if you forget) 
  • Flip flops 
  • Active wear if you want to visit the gym
  • Binoculars for birding

What NOT To Pack: 

  • Food 
  • Drinks 
  • Water (there is potable tap water available and bottled water for sale at the shop) .

Please note: Beach umbrellas are available at reception. They carry a deposit and daily usage fee.

Summer 

December to February in South Africa can get exceptionally hot, and especially at Umngazi, very humid. It’s a great time of year to enjoy the outdoors, but with the heat comes rainfall (beautiful, moody thunderstorms are our favourite). Warm clothes are not needed, but there are other items like mosquito and insect repellent and after-sun that you will need to think of.

  • Beach towels (there are towels available at reception, for a fee) 
  • Hiking shoes if you plan on going walking or hiking 
  • Insect repellent 
  • Mosquito repellent 
  • Casual clothes for mealtimes  
  • Books (there is a small library if you forget) 
  • Flip flops 
  • Active wear if you want to visit the gym 
  • Binoculars for birding
  • After sun 

What NOT To Pack: 

  • Food 
  • Drinks 
  • Water (there is potable tap water available and bottled water for sale at the shop)

Autumn 

March until May are the best months of the year in South Africa. There is little to no rainfall, very few days of wind, and the climate is almost perfect. Autumn is the best time to enjoy the beaches and other outdoor activities at Umngazi.

Winter 

From June until August, winter is in full swing – bringing with it cold evenings and mornings, along with a fresh nip in the air during the day. It’s a wonderful time of the year to enjoy Umngazi Hotel and Spa as it’s still much warmer than the rest of the country, but in the evenings we get the fires roaring. It’s perfect for connecting with loved ones or reading a book in a cozy corner. For the adventurous type, it’s a nice, cool time to partake in hikes and cycles without the fear of burning or overheating.

Every month of the year at Umngazi is spectacular and offers something unique and magical. The hotel and spa provides all the essentials, as well as all meals (including two teas) and a fully licensed bar. There is a shop on-site that has other essential items available to purchase, should you forget something like mosquito repellent (or if you’d prefer to buy bottled water).
