Two people mountain biking next to umngazi estuary

South Africa’s least spoilt coastline is found in the Eastern Cape between the Mtamvuna River in the north and the Great Kei River to the south.  The area is untamed, rugged, remote and the perfect place to go to get away from it all.

The Umngazi Hotel & Spa can be found on this Wild Coast 20kms from Port St Johns.  The area offers its visitors a temperate climate, long walks on unspoilt beaches, Nguni cows lazing on the beach and grazing on the rolling hillsides, colourful Xhosa huts, prolific and plentiful birdlife, delightful and friendly locals, breath-taking cliff hikes/walks and great expanses of undeveloped wilderness – not to mention the incredible sunrises and sunsets.

A holiday to Umngazi is an exciting adventure and experience that will last all who visit a lifetime.

Maps & Directions

According to Pondo history, when the legendary King Faku found it necessary to execute his enemies at Mlengana (Execution) Rock, their blood “igazi” literally ran down the streams into the river known as the Umngazi River. In the 19th century, troops from the British Garrison established a fresh water supply point at Umngazi for the soldiers moving between Grahamstown and Port Natal. The river still supplies the hotel today.

Scenic destination, Excellent service and facilities Our first time to Umngazi and will not be the last. The hotel suits the environment and all form a 'melting pot"of beautiful facilities and natural surrounds. Attention to detail whilst dealing with a number of people is commendable. Management are very friendly and are always on call. And YES, the FOOD. Absolutely delightful, well balanced and lots to eat if one is breaking diet rules. Best of the best. We will be back - hopefully no potholes then !

Umngazi River Bungalows: Bad road makes future visits questionable. Umngazi River Bungalows are still top-notch! The location, friendly staff, variety of offerings, food, programme and activities makes this a choice destination. Unfortunately the road into the resort is now so dilapidated that we will not visit again with our sedan before it is totally repaired. The booking administration and accounting system needs managerial oversight as it is confusing.
January Umngazi getaway We cannot fault any aspect of our stay, however, the one "sore" spot was the lovely little dog who we came to understand, on our second day, was an unwelcome stray. As an animal lover it broke my heart to see her "politely" asking to be fed and loved. Sadly I was on edge for the last two days of our stay, and I am still very concerned for her well being.

Wonderful getaway! Paradise! Wonderful getaway. Great food, great accommodation! The interior design of the accommodation and restaurant is so beautiful! They go the extra mile to ensure that you are happy and satisfied. Lovely gym and spa! Great for families.
Amazing experience The place is amazing, its like you are on a completely different planet. Beautiful views from every corner of the property. Food and wine is also great. There is somuch to do, you feel like yoi need a whole week there.
Two minor issues but otherwise excellent Our overall stay was outstanding. We did experience a double booking mix up with two of the gillies and another guest, where the other guest inexcusably took our gillie booking, and we also noticed that the floors of our room (and especially the toilet floor) were not swept or cleaned regularly. Bot other than these two minor issues our stay was amazing and we'll be back.
Best Vacation The place is beautiful and welcoming, service, food and staff is top class. I count it as one of the must visit places in South Africa in fact it should be a National Key Point. We are definitely doing it again❤️❤️❤️
Thank you Keith Thank you Keith. Umngazi is a magical place, with a wonderful manager-Keith. We had an unexpected difficult problem, at the begging of our holiday and appealed to Keith. Keith sorted the problem out and thanks to him we had a wonderful holiday.
Picturesque Perfection Picturesque Perfection set in the Wild Coast, Umngazi’s location, service and staff made this an amazing family getaway. We travelled with our 3 year old for 5 nights. We had a double room, giving us ample space and the most spectacular views of the river and ocean. If you’re looking for a great view, ask for rooms one row up from the river. The food is extensive and there is enough variety to not get bored. However, tea times and desserts were a bit disappointing - not one of the resorts strengths sadly. The kid’s dining room was a hit with our toddler and made meal times so much easier. The spa was amazing, with well trained therapists. And boasts the best views. Tons of activities to keep you busy. Definitely going back.
Unforgettable Experience An amazing holiday!!! The service, the food, the views - everything was incredible and I can see why families go back year after year. It feels like you are in another country and after visiting Umngazi there is no need to go anywhere else.

Umngazi is a children’s paradise where kids are free to run barefoot in the mud, slip & slide, ride sand dunes, cast a fishing rod and make holiday crafts.

Parents may soak up quiet pool time or unwind at our spa while child minders take care of little ones.

A separate, well-catered dining room for kids makes mealtimes a pleasure.
