The climate at Umngazi

  • Umngazi has a very comfortable sub-tropical climate.
  • The combination of mountains and sea creates a temperate zone of its own, which is ideally suited to winter holidays when dolphins and whales abound, but also keeps the temperature cool and comfortable in summer.
  • The temperature seldom drops below 14 degrees C.
  • Temperatures in summer average around 28 degrees C (high) and 17 degrees C (low), and in winter around 22 degrees C (high) and 8 degrees C (low).
  • Umngazi’s climate is perfect for holidays all year round, with sea temperatures mild enough for even mid-winter swimming.

Wildlife at Umngazi

  •   Depending on the time of year you visit, you will see varied sea life while visiting the hotel.  The dolphins love to hold their presence year-round, however our whales like to visit from July to November and we never tire of the show they put on.
  •   The annual Sardine Run takes place in and around June and this is when the water bubbles with sardines and all the sealift chasing these delectable creatures.  It is very exciting spotting all the activity from the shore or when taking a walk/run along the Sugar Loaf trail.
  •   The bird life at Umngazi is abundant and delightful.  No matter where you are at the resort you will be spoilt with bird song and colourful plumages.  Enquire at reception for an Umngazi Bird Book and have fun ticking off all the birds you spot while enjoying some well-deserved downtime.

The Pondo Pedal MTB and Trail Run

  • For the past two years Umngazi have not been able to host this event, however, the event will be taking place from the 16th – 20th May 2022.
  • This will be the 10th running of this mountain biking event.
  • This will be the inaugural Pondo Pedal 3 day trail run.
  • The race starts and finishes at the hotel and entries are filling up fast.
  • The Pondo Pedal/Trail Run is a unique bucket list event.  Where else can you enjoy exploring the Umngazi terrain on your mountain bike or in your trail shoes, indulge in the warm Pondo hospitality, stay at the award-winning Umngazi Hotel and Spa and help to make a difference to Umngazi’s local community’s neediest learners.  Entry price includes 4 nights’ accommodation with 3 meals per day.  Partners / non-riders are welcome to join at the event.
