Note from Keith & Nicole

It feels like only yesterday we were sweltering in the Wild Coast heat, and now we’re reaching for our sweaters on chilly mornings. The days may still be warm and sunny, but there’s a refreshing crispness in the air. This time of year, is truly magical at Umngazi, and we invite you to come and experience it for yourself.

The past few weeks at Umngazi have been a rollercoaster of excitement, drama, laughter, and tears. Our season started off with a bang when 300ml of rain dumped on us in a single day. It was pure chaos! Sinkholes were popping up all over the place, landslides caused mayhem, and even our bar got flooded. To top it off, our gong and jetty were washed away, and we lost electricity and Wi-Fi. But, despite all this, our amazing team pulled together with big smiles, worked super hard, and somehow managed to get things back to normal just in time for a fantastic Easter season.

The Easter weekend was a glorious affair. The weather was simply magnificent. The sea and river looked stunning and crystal clear, and our guests made the most of every second of the beautiful weather. We all enjoyed a sublime Greek themed evening, replete with enchanting décor and cuisine that transported us all straight to the streets of Greece. The baklava, in particular, was a culinary masterpiece that left us convinced that it could rival any baklava this side of Greece.

The Easter bunny made his annual visit, and the looks of pure amazement on the children’s faces were simply priceless. And let’s not forget about the amazing Sunday brunch the team presented. It was more than just a meal, it was a time to be with loved ones, relax and take in the stunning surroundings. The feast was nothing short of magnificent – there were tons of chocolates, delightful rosemary and pear tarts, fresh and zesty butternut and citrus salads, and the homeliest mielie bread ever tasted. To top it off, the Singapore Chow Mein filled with succulent prawns was bursting with flavour and was just one of the many delicious treats savoured on the day.

We are thrilled to announce that Chef John Hillhouse has joined the Umngazi family. Despite the baptism of fire (or chocolate) that he experienced when he started just before Easter, John has seamlessly integrated into the team, and we couldn’t be more excited about the positive changes that he and his team have brought to the table. Welcome, John!

As May approaches, Umngazi takes on a serene atmosphere that we believe is unmatched. We invite those of you who are not restricted by school holidays to join us and experience the beauty of this time of year. We promise you won’t regret a single moment spent here.

All our love

Keith, Nicole & the rest of the Umngazi Team
