It has been 100 years since the pioneers of Umngazi embarked on a journey to gently adapt a unique stretch of the Wild Coast to accommodate enthusiastic holidaymakers. Accommodation has evolved from simple rondavels to the more spacious, comfortable bungalows of today.
In 1924, Owen Leach and his wife Dorothy, farmers from East Griqualand took the plunge and purchased the Cwebeni trading store at Mngazi Mouth from the Lloyd family. Occasional visitors to the family included mining types from the Reef amongst whom was the Spencer Fleischer family. There were so enchanted with the surroundings and location that they sponsored the building of a rondavel on the site of present-day bungalow #9 on the understanding that they could use it over Christmas every year. The Leach family continued to operate their trading store, which remained their main source of income. However, as word spread, more visitors were drawn to the location, leading to the construction of additional rondavels to meet the growing demand. In 1947, Owen’s son Basil took over from his brother Brian and, alongside his wife, ran the establishment until 1977 when it was sold to Transkei Development Corporation (TDC). Basil and his new wife Trish then moved to Knysna to enjoy fishing and golf, their favourite pastimes.
The next 16 years saw various managers and owners until 1993 when the hotel went into liquidation and was put up for auction. Goss and Company, a Transkeian family business in the Lusikisiki area, urged by Basil Leach, acquired Umngazi in liquidation. With new owners at the helm, the hotel underwent a significant facelift to be ready for the 1993 Christmas season. Over the past 30 years, Umngazi has continued to thrive under the management of Terry and Tessa Bouwer, followed by Graham and Michelle Walker, and currently Keith and Nicole Craig. What started as a small holiday retreat primarily for fishing enthusiasts and family getaways has blossomed into a beloved destination for families, friends, honeymooners, and those celebrating special occasions.
Umngazi Hotel & Spa remains a place where memories are made, and its charm endures in the hearts of all who visit.
