Celebrating 100 Years of Umngazi Hotel & Spa

A Journey Through Time

It has been 100 years since the pioneers of Umngazi set out on a journey. They gently adapted a unique stretch of the Wild Coast to welcome enthusiastic holidaymakers. Since then, accommodation has evolved from simple rondavels to the spacious, comfortable bungalows guests enjoy today.

How It All Began (1924)

In 1924, Owen Leach and his wife Dorothy purchased the Cwebeni trading store at Mngazi Mouth from the Lloyd family. The couple were farmers from East Griqualand, and this purchase marked the start of what would become Umngazi.

Occasional visitors included mining families from the Reef, among them the Spencer Fleischer family. They were so enchanted by the surroundings that they sponsored the building of a rondavel on the site of present-day bungalow #9. In exchange, they could use it every Christmas.

Meanwhile, the Leach family continued running their trading store, which remained their main source of income. However, as word of the beautiful location spread, more visitors arrived. As a result, additional rondavels were built to meet the growing demand.

A New Generation Takes Over (1947–1977)

In 1947, Owen’s son Basil took over from his brother Brian. Basil and his wife then ran the establishment until 1977, when it was sold to the Transkei Development Corporation (TDC). Afterwards, Basil and his new wife Trish moved to Knysna to enjoy their favourite pastimes: fishing and golf.

Liquidation and a Fresh Start (1977–1993)

Over the next 16 years, Umngazi passed through various managers and owners. Then, in 1993, the hotel went into liquidation and was put up for auction.

Goss and Company, a Transkeian family business based in the Lusikisiki area, acquired Umngazi at Basil Leach’s urging. With new owners at the helm, the hotel underwent a significant facelift, in time for the 1993 Christmas season.

Three Decades of Growth (1993–Today)

Over the past 30 years, Umngazi Hotel & Spa has continued to thrive under a series of dedicated owners. Terry and Tessa Bouwer led the way first, followed by Graham and Michelle Walker, and today, Keith and Nicole Craig carry the legacy forward.

What began as a small holiday retreat for fishing enthusiasts and family getaways has since blossomed into a beloved destination. Today, families, friends, honeymooners, and guests celebrating special occasions all call it their own.
