Some friends described her as a pocket rocket and others as the smallest angel
with the biggest wings. Either way she sailed away quietly on the crest of a wave
on 14 May 2009 at the age of 81 years (won’t say old as she would clip me with her
walking stick!). Larger than life (just a smattering over 5 foot, or so she claimed),
she was the Model T Ford of her era. One of South Africa’s foremost retailers of
modern times, proclaimed recently that six months in the business world with Mrs G,
was like getting an MBA from Harvard. To Pat (Owner of Umngazi), Mick Goss &
family she was an extraordinary mother, mentor, energizer and perhaps above all,
a perennial source of laughter, optimism and so much love.

We share our condolences with the Goss families & know that she will
always be in our hearts & will always put a smile on our faces.

We are delighted to announce that Umngazi has won the AA 2009 Best Family Resort of the year award at Indaba. We are very proud of the team & thank-you to guests for completing the questionnaires. Our Spa has reached the semi-finals in the prestigious Les Nouvelles Spa Awards (Unique Spa Concept Category). The awards evening takes place on the 26 July 2009 in Johannesburg.

As from the 10 June 2009, Umngazi boasts a heated pool. The Winter days are crisp and clear and the pool is steaming at 26 ºC. Our entertainment team have created a series of exciting new kiddies games – quite unique to Umngazi and all great fun. Games include: Umngazi River Bird Watching, Banana Scavenger Hunt, the Ultimate Umngazi Treasure Hunt & many more exciting adventures.

LES’ POT ROASTED CHICKEN WITH DATES

  • 1 whole chicken
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 250 g dates
  • 2 T honey
  • 3 T sherry
  • 2 T dijon mustard
  • 750 ml chicken stock
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 tsp cumin
  • a little oil
  • In a pot heat the oil. Brown the chicken on all sides and remove.
  • Add onions and caramalise
  • Add all the other ingredients and bring to the boil
  • Place the chicken back in the pot and let the liquid simmer
  • Place a piece of foil on the top and then put the lid on tightly
  • Leave for 30 mins.
  • Turn chicken over and cover again and leave for another 30 mins.
  • Take chicken out of the pot
  • Mash the dates into the sauce and reduce the sauce slightly
  • Serve with couscous or rice – bon appetit!

A Potjie Compo was held on Fathers Day. It was enjoyed by young & old. Competition was rife which led to a very difficult decision for the judges (our Umngazi chefs!). Well done to all teams that entered including the Umngazi team…”The Ballies” who made a Banana Oxtail (they were disqualified for stealing ingredients in the kitchen!). Congrats to our winning team Margaret and Tony Lewis who entered a superb Chicken and Bacon with a hint of Chilli! Margaret will tell you that her recipe for success is just to throw a few things together in a pot but we think she's far more professional than she makes out!

We even had a team enter a dessert potjie of caramalised bread buns !

Next year there will defiantly be a rematch! Look out for recipes of the entrants potjies in our Spring Newsletter!

Our Umngazi soccer team, “Supersport” have ended the season on top of the Port St Johns Soccer Log. Well done guys.

The Whale Route starts along the south of Cape Town & extends to Durban, 1 200 miles of whale watching coastline. At least 37 species of whales & dolphins can be found in the waters off South Africa. However, the Route is most famous for encounters with southern right whales, humpback whales, and several coastal dolphin species. One can also spot African penguins, Cape fur seals, black oystercatcher birds and a variety of other marine life.
