We wish you all a very HAPPY SPRING!
Spring fever has certainly waved its magic wand over Umngazi as our spa blossoms with new fresh decor; we introduce our new family cycling adventure and lots more...
EMBRACING NELSON MANDELA DAY
Thank you to guests and staff members who pledged 67 minutes of their time on the 18 July 2013 to an extremely worthy cause. We assisted Albertina Gaxela and her brother Zoyisile Gazela who were both affected by a bad truck accident a couple of years ago. Albertina has two beautiful children. Their living standards were uplifted by our enthusiastic team who created a vegetable patch, painted their home, cleaned up and did some DIY. It was a humbling experience for all.
MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDES WITH A HEART BEAT
Umngazi proudly hosted the third Grindrod Bank Pondo Pedal, the first Momentum Pondo Pedal Family Adventure and the 14th Imana Wild Ride.
GRINDROD BANK UMNGAZI PONDO PEDAL
The Grindrod Bank Umngazi Pondo Pedal race, held annually in June, has in three years become a popular fixture on the mountain biking calendar. Billed as the epitome of purist Mountain biking, what truly sets this event apart is that it is a race with heart.

It's a team only event and catering for a variety of intermediate and advanced biking appetites, from nature lovers, to adventure seekers and racing snakes. The route takes cyclists along a diverse route that includes district roads, swamp trails and cattle paths, where teams are often cheered on by the local Umngazi community.

Congrats to the following 2013 winning teams:
Male Team - Chris Brand & Paul Firbank
Female team - Marlette Hegyi & Julie van Aswegen
Mixed team - Janine & Stu Rawlinson

We once again thank all riders for their ongoing support, generosity and for making the difference to our local schools and learners lives in the Umngazi valley.

SPA GETS A FACELIFT
OUR COMMUNITY UPDATES
The Grindrod Pondo Pedal Race auction raised a staggering total of R165 000 for the Friends of Umngazi Community Fund. A big thank-you to Lawrence Polkinghorne for auctioning some wonderful items. Riders, your kindness and support blows us all away, and to Grindrod Bank thank-you for your generous contribution. You have touched lives and made a difference. We salute you!

This years' vision for the Friends of Umngazi Community Fund is to assist the four local schools with some of their needs, which include additional class rooms, toilets, retiling, ceiling boards and sport fields.

We would like to thank Noel Otto (who participated in the Momentum Pondo Pedal Adventure) who kindly donated 500 pairs of shoes to our local community children - the smiles on their faces were a treat to behold!
A huge thank you to Siyabonga Mbanjwa from Crowie Concessions who took time out to visit Caguba Junior Secondary school with a hefty cheque of R50 000. Thank you Siyabonga and the Directors of Crowie - this money has been allocated to replacing the 27 year old rusty blackboards and tiling on the floors of 8 classrooms. Another big thank you to Lucy Pienaar and the LEARN Books team who have donated desks to our schools and delivered boxes of text books, exercise books, stationary packs, paper and much more.
We are also delighted to be hosting our 3rd group of UKZN Teaching Students who were with us for the month of August. For the 3rd year the students have come to our valley schools to do their Teaching "Pracs". This has been such a hugely successful initiative for the schools, student teachers, and most importantly the children of the 4 schools who so look forward to having these "visitors" in their classrooms. We would also like to thank Jane Pennefather and Neil Avery for playing an integral role in this process.

2013 PROMOS
DID YOU KNOW?
Shweshwe fabric originally comes from India. The German settlers brought this vibrant cotton fabric to South Africa in 1858. The Xhosa adapted the fabric to give it the uniquely African feel that it still has today. The Xhosa women, imitating the swishing sound of their skirts as they walked, named it Shweshwe.
On that note, we very much welcome your feedback and will include wherever possible your suggestions to even further improve the product and service.
