Community Update from the Grindrod Bank Umngazi 2011 Pondo Pedal MTB Race
To all our friends who took part in the inaugural 2011 Pondo Pedal and fellow mountain bikers, We heartily thank you the 2011 riders for your participation and for your contribution towards making a tangible difference in our community.
We are delighted to share with you some of the school development updates within the Umngazi valley area since the race took place in June. Prior to the Pondo Pedal, we made a decision to use the proceeds from the event to support our four local schools, namely: Cwebeni School, Caguba School, Sicambeni School and the Vukandlule School (these schools were on the Pondo Pedal route). We achieved this through Grindrod Bank's sponsorship, race entry contribution, Umngazi sponsorship, and a charity auction held on the final night of our event.
A needs analysis, focusing on uplifting the schools and more importantly benefiting the learners, was subsequently drawn up. What we found was that the biggest need in all these schools was a lack of teaching space, class rooms and kitchen/cooking facilities. So, as our primary Pondo Pedal school's project, we undertook to initiate a number of building improvements to tackle these facility shortfalls. Boxer Stores have kindly stepped in to partner with us and have offered building materials at a discounted rate. This will go some way to stretching our budget further.
