Christmas is always a happy, sentimental time at Umngazi. Our theme was an eco-traditional theme with a twist of red and white. It was as always a truly spectacular and special celebration. Our traditional Church service was held on the slipway deck followed by Santa arriving on his bicycle.

Our Chinese New Year's party (year of the Dragon) welcomed prosperity and longevity. Guests enjoyed authentic Chinese cuisine in a fun filled Chinese setting with splashes of brightly coloured paper lanterns and parasols.

Mangroves play an important role in nutrient cycling, nutrient export, sediment trapping and coastal protection, and act as breeding and nursery grounds for marine and estuarine organisms. The best honey is considered to be that produced by bees feeding in mangroves, particularly the river mangrove. Hence, the Ackerman Pick n Pay Foundation funded the Cwebeni Village Bee Farming Project with a food safe honey bottling plant, as well as ongoing training in Food Safety management systems and financial management. Pick n Pay seeks to enhance the economic sustainability of the project through providing access to the market. The project encourages sustainable use of the mangroves and investigates alternative economic opportunities to reduce dependencies on the mangroves and create incentive for management. The honey is available at selected Pick n Pay stores as well as at the Umngazi deli. The project started with 39 hives and has currently grown to 450 hives. A celebratory 10 and 15 year service awards luncheon was hosted to acknowledge the loyalty and longevity of the following staff members: 10 years of service to Kyk, Kutala, Bernard, Leticia, Florina and 15 years of service to Eselina and Zandile. We thank-you all for your commitment, your dedication and for making the difference.

It is with great sadness that we share with you; the loss of the following Umngazi staff members:
Inah Gebuza joined the Umngazi dining room team in 1999 and retired in 2009. She joined the child minder team in her retirement years and played an active role in the community. She will always be remembered for her smile and her passionate singing and dancing on Saturday evenings.

Irene Mjikelwa started working at Umngazi as a bar lady on 1 July 1999 at the age of 23 years old and progressed to become our Front Office Manager. She will always be remembered for her warm, infectious laugh, beautiful smile and warm caring nature.

Caleb Small joined Umngazi as the Assistant General Manager in 1995 and left in 2007. He was a fun loving, colourful character who enjoyed sharing social moments in the bar or fishing with guests. Christmas guests will always remember Caleb for his infamous Father Christmas arrivals - on a donkey, by helicopter, on a ski boat... his modes of arrival were always legendary and always made young and old laugh hysterically!

Jenna, our golden girl, sadly passed away after a very good innings. She will be sorely missed by all.

We are delighted to introduce weddings at Umngazi. We assure you that you will be in the most capable and caring hands. We specialise in catering for intimate weddings from 2 to 50 guests. Our wedding information and options are now available on our website. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any queries.

Ingredients and Method  

Makes 16 cupcakes

  • 60g butter
  • 150g caster sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 20 ml red food colouring
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 10g cocoa powder
  • 120 ml buttermilk
  • 150g plain flour sifted
  • 1 1/2 tsp white wine vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp bicarb

  • Preheat oven to 170C
  • Cream butter and sugar and add egg till pale and light and fluffy - Mix together cocoa powder, red food colouring and vanilla to form a paste
  • Add to butter mixture and beat until well combined
  • Pour in butter milk and flour and beat
  • Add bicarb and vinegar and beat until combined
  • Put spoonfuls into cases
  • Bake about 20 - 25 mins Ice with cream cheese icing
Cream Cheese Icing
  • 500g icing sugar sifted
  • 50g butter
  • 125g cream cheese - make sure you use cream cheese and not
    cottage cheese
  • Beat together until light and fluffy

The 4 day Grindrod Bank Umngazi Pondo Pedal Race (team only event) is the epitome of purist MTB racing.

The races starts and finishes at Umngazi every day. Over 3 days, competitors will endure 115 kilometers of varied terrain: single track, cattle track, district roads and swamp trails. The focus of the event is not only an opportunity to enjoy Umngazi's warm hospitality & cycle the most beautiful coastlines; but also to assist in making a difference to our local community's neediest learners.

Introducing the NEW Momentum Umngazi Pondo Pedal ADVENTURE, the more "chilled" cousin of the Pondo Pedal Race.

This is an individual event consisting of 3 days of cycling and 4 nights accommodation at Umngazi. The focus of the Adventure is to give riders an exclusive and upmarket MTB adventure that they can experience with their families. 17 June is a Public Holiday - stay Sunday night and receive a 30% discount!


Mngazana Estuary is located close to Umngazi and is an estuary of national importance and contains the third largest mangrove forest in South Africa, covering approximately 118ha. Many traditional medicines are made from mangroves, including those for treating skin disorders, headaches, rheumatism, snake bite, ulcers and many more. The sap from the 'blind-your-eye mangrove' can be used to treat sores and marine stings, though it can cause blindness if it gets into the eyes. The sap is being tested for its medicinal properties.
