Umngazi offers varied dining experiences and locations.
If al fresco is what you’d prefer and the weather deems it appropriate, our hearty cooking can be enjoyed under the large shady tree on the rustic Dining Room Deck, which overlooks the swimming pool and serene river views beyond.
To facilitate this, a Kids Dining Room is situated adjacent to the main dining room. This bright and airy facility is equipped with high chairs, a communal dining table, separate fridge and a microwave, all of which creates a cozy and inter-active environment in which kids can be nourished under your supervision or the watchful care of a staff member.
If you’re celebrating a special occasion with a loved one or a small group of friends, then indulge yourself at the Green Door Wine Cellar, which offers a leisurely tasting and dining experience…where the only person allowed to intrude is the waiter looking after you. Some of the wines here have been around longer than the Internet. Much longer.
Basil’s (named after Umngazi’s original owner) creates a central buzz point for the resort, with its convivial lay out and prime position over the riverfront. Whether you prefer sitting outdoors, sipping on a glass of wine or sharing stories with other guests across the bar counter, one thing is for sure…Basil’s brings people together. Over the years, revisiting guests have bonded here, relating stories of common interest and taking part in some of Umngazi’s organised social events, while making use of the bar’s game facilities and covered wooden deck.
The ladies running the bar are something of a treasure amongst regular Umngazi guests, displaying a phenomenal sense of humour along with their superb, friendly service.
Quench your thirst with one of Umngazi’s quirky ‘homemade’ cocktails or an ice-cold beer on the outside deck, and you’ll really appreciate the allure of Basil’s Bar. In fact you may not leave.
Saturday Night Seafood Evenings have become the stuff of legends amongst Umngazi visitors. This is an opportunity for the Umngazi staff to showcase their vibrant culture while guests enjoy their lovingly prepared cuisine.
A succulent combination of fish, shellfish, and home baked breads, juicy salads and hearty soups are prepared to perfection.
As the evening progresses, the Umngazi staff emerges, in traditional dress, accompanied by Pondo singing and dancing, to the delight of the guests with whom they have become acquainted over the days.
You’re welcome to join in the festivities, be it with rhythmic clapping or taking part in the singing and dancing. You don’t have to be John Travolta; you just have to be enthusiastic.
Umngazi looks to provide ‘creative dining with a difference’, and uses original ideas to maximize the natural beauty of the surrounding habitat.
Our River Breakfast is just one of the many alternative gastronomic experiences offered at Umngazi. A short ferry cruise or paddle up the river in the still, quiet, early morning will take you to a secluded destination where your buffet breakfast is set out amid the peaceful splendour, and you can take in the morning sights and sounds of the indigenous coastal bush.
These are a regular and popular occurrence and a particular favourite with our honeymooners and couples. In the late afternoon, just before dusk, your guide will take you on a gentle sojourn up the Umngazi River, which meanders through the valley between the green hillsides. Accompanied by an array of succulent snacks and a selection of chilled beverages, guests can completely unwind to the sound of lapping water and the call of the resident African Fish Eagle (yes, we pay him).
A traditional braai is the order of the day for a lazy Sunday afternoon on the dining room deck. This is weather dependant of course!
These much appreciated ‘take aways’ are always enjoyed by eager fishermen and intrepid explorers keen to spend the day out and about, wandering the surrounding hills, valleys and beaches.
